Ladakh Bike Adventure – Itinerary

Day 1 Arriving in Leh and acclamatisation

  • Arriving in Leh, acclimatize to the climate.
  • The 70 minute flight from Delhi to Leh takes you from sea level to the ancient Himalayan city at an altitude of 3505 meters (11,500 feet).
  • Because of the rarified atmosphere (air contains less oxygen) at that altitude, it is very important to rest this day to get used to the thin mountain air.
  • You will be given a detailed briefing of the tour and be provided with information on the places we will be travelling to.
  • You will meet other participants of the tour and have a get-to know each other dinner together with your guides.

Day 2 Exploring around Leh (Shanti Stupa, Shey Palace, Thiksey Monastery, Hemis Monastery)

  • Getting used to the Royal Enfield. After a day’s rest, it’s time for you to start the Ride of Your Life.
  • After breakfast we start our excursion to the Indus valley, visiting Shey Palace – a ruined castle, after that visit the 14th century Thiksey monastery,  an outstanding example of Ladakhi architecture. It is a majestic Buddhist monastery with a large Buddha statue in the seated position in the main prayer hall. We proceed to Hemis monastery – the richest monastery in Ladakh. In the end we visit the Royal Stok Palace & museum (residence of the royal family of Ladakh). Later back to hotel for overnight.
  • This ride will ensure that you get used to riding a Royal Enfield motorcycle and if you need any adjustments, the mechanics can do the same.

Day 3 Leh – Basgo – Lamayuru

130 km (around 4-6 hours riding)

  • Basgo
  • Ride towards Lamayuru Monastery – known to be the oldest monastery establishment in Ladakh. The monastery is made up of a number of shrines and also has a very rich collection of thankas and magnificent wall paintings. The village of Lamayuru is itself very interesting to see as it is build on a hill.
  • Overnight in a guesthouse

Day 4 Lamayuru – Alchi – Likir – Leh

130 km (around 4-6 hours riding)

  • After brekfast we say goodbye to Lamayuru and carry on back in the direction of Leh, taking some time to visit another two outstanding monasteries situated in very traditional villages of Alchi and Likir.
  • Alchi village is situated on the bank of Indus River. The village is famous for one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh (a national heritage) Alchi Monastery. It is mainly known for its magnificent and well-preserved 11th or 12th century wall paintings.
  • We carry on to Likir Monastery. There we admire a huge Buddha statue overlooking the village and visit the  museum. It houses a collection of thankas, old religious and domestic costumes and implements and  various old manuscripts etc.
  • We take lunch in one of the Likir’s home stays and proceed back to Leh for an overnight in a hotel.

Day 5 Leh – Kardung La pass – Nubra Valley

120 KM (about 6-8 hours riding)

  • After breakfast we ride to Nubra Valley (125km/ 5 hrs), known as the Valley of Flowers. There is only one road to Nubra valley, through the world’s Highest Motorable Road, Khardungla Pass which is at a height of 5606m. / 18380 ft. above sea level and around 39 kms from Leh. The views from the top are spectacular.
  • We take a stop on top  for a cup of hot chai (Indian tea) and photos at World’s highest road because the view from the top is spectacular!
  • In Nubra Valley we proceed to explore sand dunes in Hunder (a desert on Roof of the World!) and finally rest for the day enjoying hot springs in the village of Panamik.

Day 6 Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso Lake

180 KM (about 6-8 hours riding)

  • Morning after breakfast, we leave Nubra to the equally sensational Changthang Valley.  Sinuous tarmac roads that are almost always under construction (due to heavy snowfalls in the winter and frequent land slides) will bring the deep turquoise Pangong Tso lake into view. Dinner and overnight stay at a permanent tented camp on the lakefront.
  • The 135 km long Pangong Tso lake is a real treat. You may see many migratory birds that come there during this time of the year.
  • Overnight at home stay near to Pangong Tso Lake.

* Electricity ONLY available for 3-4 hours in the evening.

Day 7 Pangong Tso lake – Leh

160 KM (about 6-8 hours riding)

  • After breakfast, we start the ride with a steady ascend to the second highest pass of the tour, Chang La pass at 5360 m.
  • Chang La receives fewer visitors and has a more remote feel than Khardung La, while being all but its match in loftiness. A wonderfully serpentine road and surreal scenery leave us at our destination for the day, Leh.
  • Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel in Leh.

Day 8 Leh to Tso Moriri Lake

220 KM (about 7-9 hours riding)

  • The initial ride is along the majestic Indus river and the rough part is through the 5181 meters (17,000 feet) high Namshang La pass and along the pristine Thaksang karu lake.
  • The road from here to the Tso Moriri lake following the Indus River on tarmac until Chumathang, where we go off-road for an exhilarating mix of sand and dirt trails, scattered with small stones, culminating in a most magnificent view of Tso Moriri.
  • Tso Moriri Lake is situated at a high altitude of 4595 m above sea level.

Day 9 Tso Moriri to Tso Kar (salt lake)

80 KM (about 4-6 hours riding)

  • In the morning, we visit one of the Changpa nomadic campsites to get a first hand experience on how these amazing human beings have been living in perfect harmony with nature for centuries.
  • After spending time at the nomadic campsite, we retrace our ride back a little and cross Pologongka La pass at 4876 meters (16,000 feet) to reach the Tso Kar lake.
  • The Tso Kar lake known for its size and depth, is a fluctuating salt lake situated in the Rupshu Plateau and valley in the southern part of Ladakh. It is is known as ‘White Lake’ because the white salt of the water deposits all over the lake shores. It is the smallest lake among those we visit but no less spectacular.

Day 10 Tso Kar – Leh

160 KM (about 6-8 hours riding)

  • After breakfast we start towards world’s second highest pass – Tanglang La pass at 5359 meters (17 582 feet). This is a part of the famous Leh – Manali route that you’ll get a taste of.
  • We ride towards Leh passing some breathtaking villages and roads in the mighty Himalayas of Leh & Ladakh region.
  • On arrival in Leh, check into the hotel and relax.
